Image description

after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641). Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Wentworth,1st Earl of Strafford (1593-1641) with his Secretary Sir Philip Mainwaring (1589-1661) after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641), 19th century. Two three-quarter length figures, Strafford on the left seated, turned slightly to right, facing spectator, his right hand gripping the arm of his chair, his left hand holding an open letter. Mainwaring is to the right, facing the spectator with his head turned to Strafford, writing on a table, a pen held in his right hand over an open sheet of paper, more papers on the table right. A reduced nineteenth century copy of the portrait at Wentworth Woodhouse. The presence of portraits of Strafford at Attingham is explained by the fact that his collateral descendant Anne Vernon married the 1st Lord Berwick. Attingham Park, Shropshire (Accredited Museum)
