Oil painting on canvas, Portrait of an Unknown Commander, called General John Lambert (1619-1684) manner of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - Blackfriars 1641), inscribed bottom left: 'Genl Ld Lambert'. He was Commander in Chief of Parliamentary forces under the Protectorate and captured Chirk Castle in 1659. A portrait of a mature man, supposed to be General Lambert, three-quarter length, standing, turned three-quarters to left, looking over his left shoulder, wearing full armour, a blue sash tied round his left arm, a baton held in his right hand.In the background on the left is a half-effaced group of riders in the background. This portrait bears no resemblance to certain portraits of General Lambert and may not even be English. Chirk Castle, Wrexham (Accredited Museum)
