The General Screw Steam Shipping Compy's Screw Steam Ship Croesus, 1854 (lithograph, coloured)

John Vine Hall, Commander. 2500 Tons 400 Horse Power. This print is respectfully dedicated to The Directors of the GSSS Compy by The Publisher." Further particulars of her builders are given on either side of the inscription. 'Croesus' was fitted by G&J Rennie with a two-bladed propeller that could be raised in order not to impede her when under sail. She had made one voyage on the Australian Mail Service when the Crimean War broke out and she became a Government transport. She was sent to Italy to carry Sardinian troops but caught fire in the Gulf of Genoa before they were embarked and became a total wreck.
