Image description

Full title: "Fort Pickens. Pensacola Harbor, Florida." Depiction of Fort Pickens in Pensacola Harbor, the only Southern fort to remain in Union hands for the duration of the war. A large American flag flutters above the fort. Between Fort Pickens and Fort McRae (which is how it spelled on the lithograph, the actual spelling is McRee) in the background is a sailing ship. In November 1861, Fort McRee was bombarded heavily by Union forces at Fort Pickens, and by two ships, Niagara and Richmond. When Confederate forces abandoned Pensacola in May of 1862, they burned Fort McRee and several other buildings in the area believed to be of strategic value.
