HMS Endeavour, also known as HM Bark Endeavour, was a British Royal Navy research vessel that Lieutenant James Cook commanded on his first voyage of discovery, to Australia and New Zealand, from 1769 to 1771. According to Captain Cook’s Journal, Alexander Buchan was ‘Landscip Draftsman’ to Sir Joseph Banks (1743–1820) on Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific (1768–71). Here Buchan pictures Tierra del Fuego, off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland. It was first sighted by the expedition on 11 January 1769 and Endeavour anchored there, in the Bay of Good Success, a few days later. Endeavour can be seen in the foreground.
