Victoria Cross awarded to Private John McGovern, 1st Bengal European Fusiliers, 1857. From a medal group awarded to Sergeant John McGovern (1825-1888), 1st Bengal European Fusiliers. John McGovern enlisted in the Army in Ireland in 1845. He left for India in the following year and went on to serve in the 2nd Burma War (1852-1853). McGovern distinguished himself on a number of occasions during the Indian Mutiny. On 23 June 1857 McGovern was fighting in the Subzee Mundee suburb of Delhi. Despite being under heavy fire he carried a wounded comrade out of danger. McGovern transferred to the 101st Fusiliers in 1861 and stayed on in India. He eventually emigrated to Canada and died in Ontario on 22 November 1888.
