Image description

Martin Cash (1808-1877) arrived in Sydney in 1828 on a seven year sentence for housebreaking. Originally assigned to the Hunter River district he received a ticket-of-leave and moved to Tasmania in 1837. Two years later he was convicted of larceny and again sentenced to seven years. In the next three years he escaped several times and was sent to Port Arthur. On Boxing Day 1842 Cash and two companions, Lawrence Kavenagh and George Jones, made a successful escape by swimming across Eaglehawk Bay. Once at large They became bushrangers, descending from their fastness on Mt Dromedary northwest of Hobart to rob inns and homesteads with seeming impunity. In 1843 Cash was captured and convicted of shooting a constable. Sent to Norfolk Island for life he became a model prisoner and was granted a conditional pardon. He died in 1877. Lithographed poster advertising the sale of Cash's autobiography, The Adventures of Martin Cash, edited and also probably written by James Lester Burke. The poster was printed by J.
