Image description

A close-up of a five-year old female tiger at Sriracha Tiger Zoo in Thailand's eastern town of Sriracha. In this "Year of the Tiger", as Thailand's economic ambitions lie in tatters swiped by the country's worst economic crisis in decades, business in this zoo is roaring. A unique technique to tame the tigers in the zoo and for them to grow faster is to get pigs to suckle tiger cubs, rather than their natural mothers. With this technique, nine female tigers at this zoo are currently able to produce some 70 cubs annually. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) -Thailand said at a seminar on Asian tiger conservation recently that the wild tiger population in Asian jungles had dropped to about 7,000 in 1994 from about 100,000 wild tigers in the 19th century.
