Chinese construction workers carry a huge piece of glass under the projecting pointer of a giant sundial which is part of the new China Century Monument in west Beijing December 15. The first of the two phases of construction work is expected to be finished later this month for the millennium celebrations which will be attended by [President Jiang Zemin.] The 4.5-hectare complex including exhibition halls, shopping malls, entertainment centres and car parks, will cost 200 million yuan ( $24 million). The design of the monument is based on the Temple of Heaven which was used by Chinese emperors to perform major ceremonial rites.
