Image description

Large campaign broadside for delegates to the Republican Party convention of Essex County, Massachusetts for the election to be held on the first Monday in April 1823. Says at a meeting of delegates held on the 19th of March in Ipswich it was decided to support William Eustis for Governor and Levi Lincoln for Lieutenant Governor. Also supports the following men for State Senators from Essex: Nathaniel Silsbee, John Prince, Nathan Noyes, William Parrot, Aaron Lummus, and Moses Wingate. Printed address by the Chairman Benjamin W. Crowninshield. Contrasts Eustis's career to the ""mad ambition"" of Harrison Gray Otis. Makes derogatory reference to Otis's leadership at the Hartford Convention. Also expresses anger at Otis's policies toward Harvard College, his support of a national bank, and his bridge building schemes. Only has two short paragraphs in support of Lincoln and the senators. Handwritten in faded ink toward the top is a line that says ""we hoist 13 strips instead of 5,"" in reference to the New England secessionist talk at the Hartford Convention. Printed by W. & J. Gilman, State-Street, Newburyport. Eustis won the election for Governor. Crowninshield, Benjamin Williams (1772-1851)
