Image description: Many people consider the P-51 Mustang the best fighter of World War II. Its combination of speed, range, maneuverability, and firepower gave it great versatility. Its use in all major theatres of the war included long-range high-altitude escort, strafing, and photo reconnaissance. This photograph taken July 20, 1944 shows four P-51 Mustangs from the 361st Fighter Group, Eighth Air Force, in escort formation in flight over France, all carrying auxiliary fuel tanks under wings. From top is P-51D "Lou IV," unnamed P-51D , P-51D "Buy American," and another unnamed P-51B.
