New Jersey (NJ), United States of America Doctors examine African-American men from New York who have been assigned to a re-forestation project. On the left, Lieutenant Jonathan Rigdon from Fort Slocum examines the ears of a recruit, while on the right, army doctor Lyman B. Hollingshead from Pemberton, listens to the heart of another recruit with a stethoscope. The unemployed men were assigned to a re-forestation project that was organized within the framework of 'Emergency Conservation Work' also known as the 'Civilian Conservation Corps'. They were trained in Camp Dix. The project is a work-creation program and is one of the measures of the New Deal politics of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, which were intended to help surmount the effects of the Great Depression.
