VIETNAMESE HEROIN ADDICTS DO EXERCISES IN A RE-EDUCATION CENTRE OUTSIDE HANOI, 1999-07-09 (photo)

Hardcore heroin addicts undergo early morning exercises at Re-education Centre 06 at Ba Vi 60 km (37 miles) west of Hanoi July 7. These longterm heroin abusers from Hanoi underwent painful withdrawals and are detained in the centre, which currently houses 318 addicts, for periods of six months during which time they are educated on the dangers of drugs, the obligations of good citizens, and undertake physical work. Heroin use has soared in Vietnam over the past few years, and the centre is currently being expanded to take its capacity to 500 addicts by early next year. AJS/PB
