Shanghai Opera, 300 Ren Min Boulevard, Huangpu District, Shanghai (China). Realisation 1998, architect Jean Marie Charpentier. The opera plan is based on the geometry of the square, a shape considered perfect in Chinese symbolism. It represents Earth. The curved roof is a segment of circle depicting the sky. It is both a symbol and a metaphor of Chinese culture interpreted in contemporary architecture. The main facades form a transparent box of glass serigraphy housing spaces where the public can wander to the homes, restaurants, shops, surrounding the large central auditorium of 1800 seats.
